Ingredients

Scale

For The Apples:

  • 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith or any tart variety), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

For The Cake Batter:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

For Serving:

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Optional: whipped cream or vanilla sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Apples: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch (20 cm) springform pan and lightly dust it with flour to prevent sticking. Toss the peeled and sliced apples with lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and cinnamon. Set this mixture aside to let the flavors mingle.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This keeps everything well combined and ensures even rising.
  3. Make the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, use a mixer or whisk to cream the softened butter with ¾ cup sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then, beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Next, gradually add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk, starting and ending with the dry mixture, stirring just until combined.
  4. Layer the Cake: Pour half of the batter into your prepared pan and spread it evenly. Layer half of the apple mixture on top. Carefully pour the remaining batter over the apples and finish by arranging the remaining apples on top, pressing them gently into the batter.
  5. Bake and Cool: Bake your cake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean and the apples are tender. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before removing the springform sides.
  6. Serve: Dust the top with powdered sugar for a sweet finish. Optional additions like whipped cream or vanilla sauce make your dessert even more delightful. Serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy!

Notes

  • Choose tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor and texture.
  • Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature to achieve a fluffy batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter once the dry ingredients are added to keep the cake tender.
  • Let the cake cool slightly before removing the springform pan to maintain its shape.
  • For a richer taste, you can substitute milk with cream or buttermilk.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container; the cake keeps well for up to 3 days at room temperature or 5 days refrigerated.
