This Pizza Grilled Cheese recipe combines the gooey, melty goodness of classic grilled cheese with all the delicious flavors of a pizza. Featuring a crispy buttery crust, rich marinara sauce, melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, and savory turkey pepperoni, it’s a perfect comfort food that’s quick to make and delightful for both lunch and dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp butter (softened)

Pizza Fillings

  • ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)

Seasonings and Garnish

  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Evenly sprinkle garlic powder and Italian seasoning over the buttered sides to add a delicious pizza flavor as the bread toasts.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Lay two slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean flat surface. Spread marinara sauce generously on the inside of each slice. Then layer shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan, and turkey pepperoni evenly over the sauce. Add any extra toppings you’d like. Finish by placing the remaining two slices of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the assembled sandwiches onto the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, applying gentle pressure with a spatula to ensure even toasting. Carefully flip and cook until the bread turns golden brown and the cheeses melt completely.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool for one minute. Slice each sandwich in half. Garnish with fresh chopped basil if desired and serve immediately, optionally with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use medium-low heat to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
  • Substitute turkey pepperoni with veggie pepperoni or other favorite pizza toppings for variation.
  • For extra crispiness, use sourdough bread.
  • Fresh basil enhances flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Serve with additional marinara for a more authentic pizza flavor experience.
