Ingredients

Scale

Meats

  • 1 lb ground beef

Cheeses

  • 24 oz cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Pantry

  • 1 quart (32 oz) tomato sauce
  • 12 regular lasagna noodles (enough for 3 layers)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Brown Beef: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Start the Layers: Grease a 9″x13″ baking pan lightly. Ladle a small amount of tomato sauce evenly over the bottom to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  3. First Noodle Layer: Arrange a layer of uncooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce, ensuring they cover the bottom evenly.
  4. First Cheese and Meat Layer: Spread half of the cottage cheese over the noodles, sprinkle half of the Parmesan cheese evenly, and distribute one-third of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
  5. Add Ground Beef and Sauce: Spoon half of the cooked ground beef evenly over the cheese layer and drizzle one-third of the tomato sauce on top.
  6. Repeat Layers: Repeat layering by adding noodles, the remaining half of cottage cheese, remaining Parmesan cheese, one-third of mozzarella, the remaining half of ground beef, and another third of tomato sauce.
  7. Top Layer: Add the last layer of noodles, pour the remaining tomato sauce, and sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.
  8. Prepare for Baking: Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil and place the baking dish on a baking tray to catch any spills.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes covered. After baking, you may remove the foil and bake an additional 5-10 minutes to brown the cheese if desired. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before serving to set.

Notes

  • Do not boil the noodles beforehand; they will cook in the sauce and steam inside the oven.
  • Use full-fat cheeses for creamier texture and better melting.
  • Letting the lasagna rest after baking helps it slice cleanly and holds the layers together.
  • For a healthier twist, substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef.
  • You can add chopped vegetables such as spinach or mushrooms to add nutrients and flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning in tomato sauce or add Italian herbs like basil and oregano for enhanced flavor.
  • Covering the pasta with sauce is essential to prevent dryness and ensure noodles soften properly.
