Ingredients

Scale

Hash Browns

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 20 ounces frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground pork sausage
  • 8 ounces diced ham
  • 1 medium white onion, diced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the Hash Browns: Melt 4 tablespoons salted butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 20 ounces thawed shredded hash browns, seasoning with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook with minimal flipping until the hash browns turn golden brown and crispy, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside, wiping out the pan.
  2. Cook the Sausage and Vegetables: Add 1 pound ground pork sausage to the same skillet and cook for approximately 5 minutes, breaking it into crumbles as it browns. Then stir in 8 ounces diced ham, 1 diced medium white onion, and 1 diced medium red bell pepper. Season again with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened and lightly browned.
  3. Combine Hash Browns with Meat Mixture: Return the cooked hash browns to the skillet and gently fold them into the sausage and vegetable mixture to combine evenly. Turn off the heat after mixing.
  4. Add Cheese and Serve: Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the hash in the skillet. Allow the cheese to melt for about 2-3 minutes before serving immediately while warm and gooey.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, avoid stirring the hash browns too frequently during cooking.
  • Feel free to substitute ground pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
  • Red bell pepper and onion can be swapped for other vegetables like green peppers or mushrooms.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese rather than pre-shredded to achieve better melting.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead by cooking the components separately and combining before serving.
