Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Bites

  • 4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread (1″/2.5cm thick)
  • 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 3 tbsp butter, divided
  • Maple syrup, for serving (not optional!)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread cubes: Cut the crust off the bread slices and then cut each slice into 9 equal cubes to create bite-sized pieces perfect for sautéing.
  2. Make the egg mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt until well combined and smooth.
  3. Mix the cinnamon sugar: In a shallow bowl, combine the white sugar and cinnamon powder thoroughly to create the coating.
  4. Melt butter in pan: Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat, ensuring the butter melts without browning.
  5. Coat bread cubes in egg mixture: Quickly toss half of the bread cubes in the egg mixture using your hands, then shake off any excess liquid to avoid sogginess.
  6. Sauté the bread cubes: Place the coated bread cubes in the hot frying pan and use a wooden spoon to gently sauté them, turning frequently until all sides are golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Coat in cinnamon sugar: Transfer the browned bread cubes directly into the cinnamon sugar mixture and toss them well to coat every side evenly. Then place them on a plate.
  8. Repeat for remaining bread cubes: Add the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter to the pan and repeat the tossing, sautéing, and coating steps with the rest of the bread cubes.
  9. Serve immediately: Serve the cinnamon French toast bites warm alongside maple syrup for dipping, enhancing their sweet and cinnamony flavor.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread as it soaks up the egg mixture better and holds shape without becoming mushy.
  • Do not let the butter brown, as burnt butter will affect the flavor of the bites.
  • Shaking off excess egg mixture prevents the bread from becoming soggy and helps achieve a crisp exterior.
  • These bites are best enjoyed immediately to maintain their crispness and warm texture.
  • Adjust cinnamon level to taste if you prefer more or less spice flavor.
