This Cherry Chipotle BBQ Sauce combines the natural sweetness of cherries with the smoky heat of chipotle peppers, balanced by honey and apple cider vinegar for a tangy kick. Perfect for glazing grilled meats or serving as a bold dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Cherry Chipotle BBQ Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cherries
  • 2 tablespoons diced chipotles in adobo
  • 3 tablespoons wildflower honey or agave
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place all ingredients except the apple cider vinegar into a medium saucepan over medium heat to start the cooking process.
  2. Simmer: When the mixture just reaches a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. During this time, the cherries will soften and break down, releasing their juices to form the base of the sauce.
  3. Cool and Puree: Allow the sauce to cool slightly, then transfer it to a blender and puree until completely smooth to achieve a perfect sauce texture.
  4. Finish with Vinegar: Stir in the apple cider vinegar to add acidity and brighten the flavors. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as necessary.
  5. Optional Straining: For an extra smooth BBQ sauce, pass the puree through a fine strainer to remove any remaining pulp for a silky finish.

Notes

  • Use fresh or frozen cherries based on availability; both work equally well.
  • Adjust the amount of chipotles in adobo for desired heat level.
  • Honey can be substituted with agave nectar for a vegan option.
  • Straining the sauce is optional but results in a smoother texture.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container refrigerated for up to one week.
